The 'S' in ESG – RMB’s Asset Manager Incubation Programme

RMB’s Global Securities Solutions team realised the huge barriers to entry for a new asset manager company to be established, particularly in the BEE space. We wanted to grow the number of asset managers in the market, but realised some support was required to make this happen.

As a result we started to identify promising hedge-fund managers in the BEE domain, who require initial seed capital to launch a new fund or a new strategy. We look particularly for experienced fund managers originating from recognised asset managers that we believe would be capable of running their own fund.

To date, we have supported a number of asset managers to set up their own businesses by offering seed capital, as well as infrastructure support to ensure they can focus on the business of managing assets rather than establishing a new business infrastructure.

Ultimately this programme is aimed at supporting the social upliftment of South Africa through encouraging asset management skills and supporting the setting up of new hedge funds. It creates a bigger pie for all.
